Situations Vacant

You'll notice I'm spending less time posting here, and that's because we're growing ridiculously fast.

There are now 5 of us in The Web Consultancy / Noisy Little Monkey team. But we still need more help.... Ideally we're looking for retired sales bods or people (mums, typically) who are self motivated and happy to work part time from home. You need to understand what makes people buy online and you need to be web savvy.

You'll get training on all aspects of SEO and we'll make you into a Google AdWords Professional. You'll also get paid quite well indeed!

All we need is 2-5 days of your time per week.

Come on - it's fun and you can keep your clothes on, mostly.

Contact Us for more info.

The Web Consultancy & Noisy Little Monkey Ltd

The Web Consultancy is pleased to announce it has recently acquired Noisy Little Monkey Ltd. I'll still be delighting in improving the profitability of my clients through Bespoke SEO and Search Marketing, Usability Analysis and general Web Consultancy, which is good.

Crucially though, this expansion will enable The Web Consultancy to expand the team (from just me and Mr Dog) to include two other fine upstanding web designers and marketeers who will carry out my instructions with an attention to detail that I am unable to provide, now that I work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week.

The expanded team means we'll be able to add a more formal web design offering to our list of services, which is good, because after designing a few highly profitable websites*, The Web Consultancy is much in demand for our cool design and 1337 h4X0r skillz.

I'll post more information here soon, once the legal stuff is all sorted, until then...

Google PageRank Update - 27th September 2008

Looks like there's been another PageRank update from Google. I've been waiting sometime for big update, so I'm really pleased!

N.B. If you're not sure what your site's PageRank is, you can learn that here: What is my Google PageRank? and if you want some ideas on how to improve it, you can find those here: Improve Your PageRank.

Anyhow - back to the PageRank update - what's happened? Well, I've found that the majority of sites I'm working on have got a greatly improved PageRank for many of their deeper pages within the site. However in some cases, sites showing these results have seen the PageRank for the home page drop by a factor of 1.

While this alarmed me at first, looking at the bigger picture, if the pages deeper within the site have a better PageRank, then it means that Google is likely to direct more traffic with 'long tailed keywords' to these pages, rather than to the web site's home page. In my experience, this makes the visitor 50-75 % more likely to buy / enquire / download or whatever. So, it all looks rosy!

It should be said that a high Google PageRank by no means guarantees a high placement in Google's results pages and equally, a low PageRank isn't all bad news. However, the general rule of thumb is the higher the better if you want to sell your products and services online.

For more information on improving your PageRank, how Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) can get more traffic to your website, call The Web Consultancy. We will help!

Google's New Rival Launches Today!

Anna Patterson, who sold her last search engine to Google back in 2004 has launched her new project "Cuil". Cuil is apparently an old Irish word for knowledge. I suspect it had more to do with the fact that "knowledge.com" had already been taken, than the American habit of claiming long lost Irish / Scottish / Welsh ancestry, but anyway

Cuil claims to index 120 billion web pages, which is (according to Cuil) three times more than Google and ten times as many as Microsoft.

You can rest assured that the web consultancy will submit your pages to this new search engine on the block and will stay ahead of the game, so you don't have to. In fact we're already in it. Our search engine optimisation service has worked wonders for many, isn't it time we started working on your site so it works harder for you?

Byeee!

Your Website's Visitors Don't Want To Waste Time

Jakob Nielsen the usability Guru has recently published his most recent report into web use....

"The designs have become better but also users have become accustomed to that interactive environment," Dr Nielsen
"Now, when people go online they know what they want and how to do it", he said.

This makes them very resistant to highlighted promotions or other editorial choices that try to distract them.

"Web users have always been ruthless and now are even more so," said Dr Nielsen.

"People want sites to get to the point, they have very little patience," he said.

"I do not think sites appreciate that yet," he added. "They still feel that their site is interesting and special and people will be happy about what they are throwing at them."

Interesting interview with Google chap

When optimising your site to achieve higher rankings in Google, you'll often have an amazing idea about how to fool Google into thinking your site is bigger, better and more important than it actually is.

If you're one of my clients I'll often (tactfully) tell you that you cannot use your "revolutionary" technique as it has been used by people who have tried to (or are trying to) fool Google for more nefarious purposes and therefore it will be considered 'spamming'.

While the article below is probably too detailed for many end users, it is a great interview with Matt Cutts, of Google's antispam team and is pretty interesting... which these interviews have a tendency not to be, normally.

Enjoy!
